Welcome to the year 1742
Bourtange is a unique destination where history and experience come together. For families, groups, and culture lovers, this fortified village is the place to discover stories from the past. Whether you come for the museums, events, or the special atmosphere, you will experience an unforgettable day here.
The history of Bourtange
The history of Bourtange begins in 1580, when William of Orange ordered the construction of a defensive work. It was situated on a strategic sand ridge in the marshland, precisely on the route between Groningen and Germany. Thanks to the star-shaped moats and ramparts, the fortress remained impregnable for centuries.
Between 1593 and 1851, it played an important role in the defense of Groningen. After its dissolution, Bourtange transformed into an agricultural settlement, but the contours of the fortress remained visible. This unique heritage makes it one of the most beautiful places in the Northern Netherlands today.

A unique fortress
What makes this fortress so special is the complete reconstruction carried out in the 1960s. Based on historical drawings and maps, moats, ramparts, and buildings were rebuilt.
Today, it seems as if time has stood still in 1742. The authentic street plan, the monumental buildings, and the mighty ramparts offer visitors a unique glimpse into history. This makes Bourtange not only a defensive structure but also a lively village where past and present come together.
